4th of July DIY Mason Jars

Posted on 01 July 2020

With summer right around the corner, it’s a great time to make some patriotic crafts for 4th of July. In this post, we will be teaching you how to make a 4th of July Mason Jar flower vase.

What you will need:

  • 3 Mason Jars (or more depending on how many vases you want)
  • Red, White, and Blue acrylic paint (or chalk paint)
  • Paint Brush (or foam brush)
  • Matte Paint Spray Sealer
  • Painter's Tape
  • Sponge (or scrubbing brush)
  • Paper Plate (or newspaper)
  • Pencil
  • Scizzors
  • Fresh flowers of your choice (We used a mix of baby’s breath, carnations, and white hydrangeas)

Pre-DIY: Gather all the materials

Step 1: Clean the Mason Jars

Wash the jar with hot, soapy water. Use a sponge or scrubbing brush to remove dirt, dust, and oil from the jars. Then, let dry.

Step 2: Paint a white base coat

Use thin, even vertical strokes on the outside of the Mason Jar. Make sure to cover all surface area. Use a paper plate or newspaper to paint on top of to avoid getting paint everywhere.

PRO TIP: flip the Mason Jar upside down for an easier painting experience.

Step 3: Let the Mason Jars dry

If you used chalk paint, let the Mason Jar dry for a minimum of 30 minutes. If you used acrylic paint, let the Mason Jar dry for at least 24 hours. Make sure to dry the Mason Jars in a well-ventilated area.

Optional step: Paint a second white coat

Depending on how strong you would like the color of the designs to be you may want to consider applying more than one coat. If you add the second coat, let dry for the same amount of time.

Step 4: Stencil out the star design in Painter’s Tape

Use a pencil to outline the stars on the Painter’s Tape. Once you are satisfied with the size and quantity of stars you may cut out the stars.

Step 5: Place the star Painter’s Tape on one of the Mason Jars

Using the cut-out stars, place them around the Mason Jar. Make sure to offer plenty of space between the stars.

Step 6: Paint the Mason Jar Blue

Using the Mason Jar with the star tape on it, apply a layer of blue paint to the outside. Make sure to cover all surface area.

Optional step: Paint a second blue coat

Depending on how strong you would like the color of the jar to be you may want to consider applying more than one coat.

Step 7: Place lines of Painter’s Tape on the remaining Mason Jars

Use the Painter’s Tape to add horizontal lines across the Mason Jar. Make sure to put ample space between the lines as you will be painting the areas in-between them.

Step 8: Paint the remaining Mason Jars Red

Apply a layer of red paint to the outside of the Mason Jar. Make sure to cover all surface area.

Optional step: Paint a second red coat

Depending on how strong you would like the color of the jar to be you may want to consider applying more than one coat.

Step 9: Let the Mason Jars Dry & remove the Painter’s tape

If you used chalk paint, let the Mason Jar dry for a minimum of 30 minutes. If you used acrylic paint, let the Mason Jar dry for at least 24 hours. Make sure to dry the Mason Jars in a well-ventilated area.

Step 10: Spray the Mason Jars with a sealant and enjoy!

When you are content with how your Mason Jars look, spray the jars with the matte sealant. This offers a layer of protection for the paint and prevents chipping.

PRO TIP: use fresh cut flowers such as baby’s breath, carnations, and white hydrangeas for the best results!
