Delphinium Care Guide
Delphiniums are one of the most dramatic and elegant flowers you can work with. Their tall, towering spikes of blooms in shades of blue, purple, white, and pink make them a showstopper in any arrangement. They're a favorite for wedding arches, tall centerpieces, and garden-style designs where height and drama are the goal.
What You'll Need
- A clean, tall vase
- Fresh, cool water
- Floral preservative (recommended)
- Sharp scissors or floral shears
Step-by-Step Care Instructions
- Unpack carefully. Delphiniums are tall and their blooms are delicate, so handle them gently when removing from packaging.
- Trim the stems. Cut 1 to 2 inches off the bottom of each stem at a 45-degree angle. Delphinium stems are hollow, so a clean, sharp cut is important for good water flow.
- Use a tall vase with plenty of water. Delphiniums need good support for their tall stems. A deep vase with cool, clean water and floral preservative is ideal. The preservative helps keep the individual florets along the spike looking fresh longer.
- Remove lower foliage. Strip any leaves that would sit below the waterline to keep the water clean.
- Change the water every 2 days. Re-trim the stems each time to keep them drinking well.
- Keep in a cool spot. Delphiniums are sensitive to heat. Keep them away from direct sunlight, heat vents, and ripening fruit for the longest vase life.
Pro Tips
- Handle with care: The individual florets along each spike are delicate and can bruise or drop if handled roughly. Always support the stem from the bottom when moving them.
- Great for height: Use delphiniums in tall centerpieces, ceremony arches, and installations where you need vertical drama. They're one of the few flowers that naturally provide that towering, elegant height.
Florist Secret
Because delphinium stems are hollow, they can sometimes trap air bubbles that block water from traveling up the stem. To fix this, after trimming, turn the stem upside down and fill the hollow stem with cool water using a small funnel or your finger over the end, then place it directly into the vase. This simple trick ensures the stem is fully hydrated from the start and can make a noticeable difference in how long your delphiniums last!
How Long Will They Last?
With proper care, delphiniums typically last 5 to 7 days in a vase. Keeping them cool and well hydrated is the key to getting the most out of every stem.
