Scabiosas Care Guide
Scabiosa, also known as Pincushion Flower, is one of the most charming and whimsical flowers in the floral world. Its delicate, ruffled petals surround a domed center that looks just like a little pincushion, giving it a unique, romantic look that's hard to replicate with any other flower. It's a favorite for garden-style and wildflower-inspired wedding designs.
One important thing to know: like all of our flowers, scabiosa is not ready to display the moment it arrives. When they first come out of the box, the blooms may look like small, tight little balls. That's completely normal! They need time to hydrate and open up, and once they do, the transformation is beautiful. Give them a day or two in fresh water and you'll see them bloom into the full, romantic flowers they're meant to be.
What You'll Need
- A clean vase
- Fresh, cool water
- Floral preservative (recommended)
- Sharp scissors or floral shears
Step-by-Step Care Instructions
- Unpack gently. Scabiosa blooms are delicate, so handle them with care when removing from packaging.
- Trim the stems. Cut 1 to 2 inches off the bottom of each stem at a 45-degree angle to improve water uptake.
- Fill your vase. Use clean, cool water with floral preservative. Scabiosa benefits from the nutrients in preservative to keep the blooms looking fresh and the buds opening well.
- Remove lower foliage. Strip any leaves that would sit below the waterline to keep the water clean.
- Be patient and let them bloom. Place them in a warm, bright spot (out of direct sun) and give them time to open. You'll be amazed at the difference a day or two makes.
- Change the water every 2 days. Re-trim the stems each time to keep them drinking well.
- Keep in a cool, bright spot once bloomed. Once open, move them to a cooler spot to extend their vase life.
Pro Tips
- Multiple buds per stem: Scabiosa stems often carry both open blooms and smaller buds. As the main bloom fades, the side buds will continue to open, extending the life of each stem.
- Perfect for romantic designs: Scabiosa pairs beautifully with garden roses, ranunculus, and eucalyptus for a soft, romantic, just-picked look.
Florist Secret
Scabiosa has very fine, wiry stems that can sometimes struggle to drink efficiently. To give them the best start, after trimming place them immediately into water without letting the cut ends dry out even for a moment. Some florists trim scabiosa stems directly under running water or while holding them submerged in a bucket to ensure no air enters the stem. It sounds fussy but it makes a real difference in how well they hydrate and how long they last!
How Long Will They Last?
With proper care, scabiosa typically lasts 5 to 7 days in a vase. Fresh water, cool temperatures, and gentle handling are the keys to getting the most out of these beautiful, delicate blooms.
