We made ours with farm-fresh carnations and pompom button mums from Bloomingmore, and hung it from a tree for a lovely outdoor dinner. The result was dreamy, romantic, and entirely made by hand.
What You Will Need
- Farm-fresh flowers of your choice (we used carnations and pompom button mums in a colorful mix)
- A birdcage (we found ours at Michaels for around $5)
- Floral foam (dry foam works, but soaked wet foam is recommended to keep your flowers hydrated and lasting longer)
- Thick rope or hemp twine for hanging
- Scissors
Cut the ends of your stems at an angle and allow them to hydrate in fresh water for at least 1 to 2 hours before arranging. This keeps your flowers fresh and gives you more flexibility to work with throughout the project.
How to Make a Floral Birdcage Centerpiece
Step 1: Select Your Flowers
Choose the flowers you want to use and set them aside. Think about your color palette and how the blooms will look together inside the birdcage. A mix of different flower sizes and textures, like full carnation heads paired with small pompom buttons, creates the most visually interesting result.
Step 2: Prep Your Floral Foam
Birdcages typically come with a small dry foam block inside, which works fine for a single-event display. However, if you want your flowers to last longer, we strongly recommend swapping it out for water-soaked floral foam instead. Soaked foam keeps your stems hydrated throughout the event and well beyond, giving your blooms a much longer, more beautiful life. To soak your foam, place it in a container of water and allow it to absorb fully before using, usually about 10 to 15 minutes. Do not press or force the foam down into the water, just let it sink on its own so it soaks evenly all the way through.
Once your foam is ready, poke holes in it before inserting your stems to make placement easier and to prevent delicate stems from snapping. We found it easiest to work with the foam already inside the birdcage rather than building the arrangement outside and trying to place it in after. That said, this is completely your call based on your design preference and the size of your birdcage opening.
Step 3: Arrange Your Flowers
Begin inserting your flowers into the foam, working from the center outward or from one side to the other, whichever feels most natural to you. Fill in gaps with smaller blooms or petals as you go. There is no wrong way to do this. The design is entirely yours, so have fun with it and let the flowers guide you.
Step 4: Hang and Display
Once your arrangement is complete, thread your rope or hemp twine through the top of the birdcage and hang it from a tree branch, a shepherd's hook, a pergola, or any overhead structure at your event. The birdcage also looks beautiful displayed on a table as a standing centerpiece if hanging is not an option for your venue or setup.
