Summer parties deserve centerpieces that are just as fresh, colorful, and full of life as the season itself. This DIY fruit vase project is one of our all-time favorites: it is easy, affordable, completely unique, and the best part is that you can eat the vase when the party is over. We used a watermelon, honeydew, and pineapple filled with farm-fresh carnations and hydrangeas, but you can mix and match any flowers you love.
Before you start, cut the ends of your stems at an angle and allow them to hydrate in fresh water for at least 1 to 2 hours. This keeps your blooms fresh and perky throughout the entire party.
What You Will Need:
- Fresh fruits of your choice (we used a watermelon, honeydew, and pineapple)
- A sharp knife and metal scooper
- 3 plastic bags or the bottom halves of plastic bottles (to hold water inside the fruit)
- Fresh flowers of your choice: we love carnations, hydrangeas, sunflowers, or spray roses for a summer palette
How to Prepare Each Fruit:
Pineapple: Cut off the top and use a metal scooper to clear out the pulp from the inside. Once cleared, line the inside with a plastic bag or insert the bottom half of a plastic bottle. Fill with water and it is ready for flowers.
Honeydew: Cut a hole out of the top and remove the cap. Scoop out the seeds and the white interior until the cavity is clear. Line with a plastic bag, fill with water, and you are ready to arrange.
Watermelon: Cut your desired shape out of the melon and scoop out the insides until the cavity is clear. Line with a plastic bag, fill with water, and it is ready to go.
Once all three fruits are prepped, stabilize them on a flat surface and begin arranging your flowers! Trim stems as needed to fit the depth of each fruit vase. Start with your larger focal blooms like hydrangeas, then fill in the gaps with carnations and any greenery you love.
