Amaranthus Care Guide
Amaranthus is a stunning and dramatic botanical that adds incredible movement, texture, and depth to any floral design. Available in rich shades of deep red and green, it is a favorite for large installations, cascading bouquets, and any design that calls for a bold, flowing accent.
Like all of our flowers, amaranthus is not ready to display the moment it arrives. Give it a little time to hydrate and settle in after its journey and it will look its best.
A Note on Varieties and Availability
We carry two varieties of amaranthus: Amaranthus, which grows upright and adds bold vertical structure to arrangements, and Hanging Amaranthus, which cascades downward with long, dramatic trailing tassels. Both are beautiful in their own way and have slightly different uses in design. Amaranthus is a seasonal product, so availability may vary. Reach out to us to find out what is currently available.
What You'll Need
- A clean vase or bucket
- Fresh, cool water
- Sharp scissors or floral shears
Step-by-Step Care Instructions
- Unpack promptly. Remove your amaranthus from the packaging as soon as it arrives and let it breathe.
- Trim the stems. Cut 1 to 2 inches off the bottom of each stem at a 45-degree angle to improve water uptake.
- Remove lower foliage. Strip any leaves that would sit below the waterline to keep the water clean.
- Fill your vase. Use clean, cool water. Amaranthus is relatively hardy and does not require floral preservative, though it won't hurt.
- Change the water every 2 days. Re-trim the stems each time to keep them drinking well.
- Keep in a cool spot. Avoid direct sunlight and heat sources for the longest vase life.
Pro Tips
- Use amaranthus for structure: Upright amaranthus is perfect for adding bold vertical lines and height to arrangements and centerpieces. It pairs beautifully with large focal flowers and lush greenery.
- Let hanging amaranthus drape freely: Hanging amaranthus looks most beautiful when its tassels are allowed to cascade and drape naturally. Give it room to flow for the most dramatic effect. It is one of the best elements for cascading bouquets and hanging installations.
- It dries beautifully: Both varieties hold their shape and color well when dried. Simply hang upside down in a cool, dry spot and let dry naturally for a long-lasting dried accent.
Florist Secret
Even a single stem of hanging amaranthus allowed to cascade over the edge of a vase or centerpiece transforms the entire look. Don't be afraid to let it hang low and trail dramatically. The longer and more freely it drapes, the more stunning the effect!
How Long Will They Last?
With proper care, amaranthus typically lasts around 7 days in a vase. Keeping the water fresh and the stems well-trimmed will help you get the most out of every stem.
