Ivy Care Guide
Ivy is a classic and timeless trailing greenery that adds a soft, romantic, and natural feel to any floral design. With its distinctive lobed leaves and graceful vining stems, ivy is a go-to choice for cascading bouquets, garlands, table runners, and any design where you want a lush, flowing, garden-inspired look. It pairs beautifully with virtually any flower and is especially popular for weddings and elegant events.
Like all of our products, ivy is not ready to display the moment it arrives. Give it a little time to hydrate and settle in after its journey and it will look its best.
Varieties
We carry two varieties of cut ivy: Green Ivy, with its classic deep green leaves, and Variegated Ivy, which features beautiful green and white patterned leaves that add an extra layer of texture and interest to any design. The care is the same for both varieties.
What You'll Need
- A clean vase or bucket
- Fresh, cool water
- Sharp scissors or floral shears
Step-by-Step Care Instructions
- Unpack promptly. Remove your ivy from the packaging as soon as it arrives and let it breathe.
- Trim the stems. Cut 1 to 2 inches off the bottom of each stem at a 45-degree angle to improve water uptake.
- Remove lower foliage. Strip any leaves that would sit below the waterline to keep the water clean.
- Fill your vase. Use clean, cool water. Ivy is hardy and does not require floral preservative.
- Change the water every 2 days. Re-trim the stems each time to keep them drinking well.
- Keep in a cool spot. Avoid direct sunlight and heat sources for the longest vase life.
Pro Tips
- Perfect for cascading designs: Ivy is one of the best greeneries for cascading bouquets and hanging installations. Let the vines trail naturally for a lush, romantic, garden-gathered look.
- Great for garlands: Ivy is a classic choice for garlands and table runners. Its vining stems weave together easily and create a full, lush look that is hard to beat.
- Holds up well out of water: Ivy is relatively sturdy and holds up well out of water for several hours, making it a practical choice for event installations and designs where it can't be kept in water during setup.
Florist Secret
For the most natural, flowing look with ivy, resist the urge to cut it into short pieces. Instead, let longer strands trail freely out of the sides and bottom of your arrangement or bouquet. Layering several strands of different lengths creates a beautifully lush, organic effect that looks like it was gathered straight from a garden wall!
How Long Will They Last?
With proper care, ivy typically lasts around 7 days in a vase. Keeping the water fresh and the stems well-trimmed is the key to getting the most out of every stem.
