A floral frame is one of the most beautiful and budget-friendly DIY projects you can make for a wedding, event, or even your home. Whether you use it as a photo booth prop, an altar backdrop, or a garden-party accent, a fresh flower frame makes an instant statement. Here is how to make one step by step with farm-fresh blooms from Bloomingmore.
We recommend creating your frame the day before your event. Cut the ends of your stems at an angle and allow them to hydrate in fresh water for at least 1 to 2 hours before arranging. This keeps your farm-fresh blooms looking their best throughout the entire event.
Choosing Your Flowers
Antique and vintage frames are a stunning backdrop for flowers and a perennial favorite for weddings, events, and styled shoots. For an authentic rustic-chic feel, rescue a frame from your local thrift shop, distress one you already have at home, or pick one up at a craft store. We used a large antique frame measuring 33 x 25 inches, but the concept works beautifully at any size. You can even join several frames together as a dramatic altar installation.
For large frames, use at least one statement flower such as roses, lilies, carnations, or spider mums, paired with smaller coordinating blooms for texture and contrast. We do not recommend hydrangeas for this project as they are very thirsty flowers that may wilt without a water source unless you use water tubes and refresh them every few hours.
What You Will Need
- Clean container of fresh water
- Picture frame — we used an antique frame measuring 33 x 25 inches
- Clear fishing line
- Sharp scissors or garden shears
- 2 bunches of fresh flowers — we used a mix of pink and light pink roses from Bloomingmore
- 1 bunch of fresh ruscus
Step 1: Hydrate Your Flowers
Cut stem tips diagonally and place in a container of fresh water. Allow your flowers to hydrate for at least 1 to 2 hours before you begin. Well-hydrated blooms will hold up much longer throughout your event and look more open and lush once arranged.
Step 2: Create a Base of Greens
Begin by placing your ruscus or greens of your choice along two opposite corners of the frame. Be generous with the greens to achieve a full, luscious look. All stems should point in the same direction with some leaves cascading naturally off the frame for an organic, garden-gathered feel.
Step 3: Add Your Flowers
Once your greens base is in place, begin adding the flowers. Cut each stem 3 inches from the base of the bloom and place them in small clusters along the frame. Just as with the greens, keep your flowers pointing in the same direction to reflect the natural way a vine grows, creating a cohesive and flowing design.
Step 4: Cover the Corners Completely
Continue adding flowers until no part of the frame is exposed in the two decorated corners, or until your design feels complete. Step back frequently to check the balance and fullness from a distance. This is also the moment to tuck in any smaller filler blooms if you want to add extra texture and depth.
Step 5: Secure Everything with Fishing Line
Once you are happy with the arrangement, use clear fishing line to tie everything securely to the frame. Weave it around the stems and hide it behind the leaves for a clean, invisible finish. If your frame will be displayed outdoors, add extra fishing line to ensure the flowers stay in place in the wind.
Congratulations! You now have a stunning floral frame ready to be used as a photo booth prop, an altar backdrop, a garden accent, or a statement piece at any event. Your guests will love it, and you will treasure the photos taken in front of it for years to come.
