The Wedding Flower Calculator: How Many Stems Do You Actually Need?
One of the most common questions we get from Blooming Enthusiasts planning a DIY wedding is: how many flowers do I actually need? Order too few and you are scrambling the night before. Order too many and you are swimming in blooms (which, honestly, is not the worst problem to have). Either way, a little planning goes a long way.
Below is a practical guide to help you estimate stem counts for every part of your wedding, from the bridal bouquet to the ceremony arch. These counts are based on medium-sized focal flowers roughly 4 cm in diameter, like garden roses, carnations, peonies, or calla lilies.
Bridal Bouquet
A full, round bridal bouquet typically uses 24 to 36 focal stems, depending on the flower size and how lush you want it to look. Add 5 to 10 stems of fillers and a few sprigs of greenery to fill it out and give it texture.
Bridesmaid Bouquets
Bridesmaid bouquets are typically smaller, using 12 to 18 focal stems each, plus 3 to 5 filler stems. Multiply by the number of bridesmaids and add 10% as a buffer.
Boutonnieres
Each boutonniere uses 1 to 2 focal stems plus a small sprig of greenery or filler. Simple, clean, and easy to make the night before.
Ceremony Centerpieces (Low)
A low, lush centerpiece for a round table typically uses 15 to 25 focal stems, 8 to 12 filler stems, and 4 to 6 greenery stems. For a more relaxed, garden-style look, lean toward the higher end and mix in ranunculus or hydrangeas as accent flowers.
