Flower Care Guide | How to Care for Farm-Fresh Flowers
General Flower Care Guide
At Bloomingmore, we believe every bloom deserves the chance to shine. Our farm-fresh flowers travel directly from our partner farms to your door, which means they arrive fresher than anything you will find at a grocery store or local shop. But like any living thing, they need a little love when they arrive. Follow these simple steps and your flowers will open beautifully, last longer, and bring joy to every space they touch.
Step 1: Open Your Box Right Away
The moment your Bloomingmore box arrives, open it! Flowers that sit in a closed box too long can become stressed from heat and lack of air. They have been on a journey and they are ready to breathe.
Step 2: Prepare Your Water
Fill a clean vase or bucket with fresh, cool water and add the flower food packet if included. Flower food gives your blooms the nutrients they need and helps keep bacteria at bay so your flowers stay fresher, longer.
Step 3: Cut Your Stems
Using sharp scissors or a knife, cut each stem at a 45-degree angle about 1 to 2 inches from the bottom. This reopens the water channels in the stem so your flowers can drink properly. Always cut under water or place stems in water immediately after cutting for the best results.
Step 4: Remove Lower Leaves
Strip any leaves that would fall below the waterline. Leaves sitting in water create bacteria that shorten the life of your blooms. A clean vase means happy flowers.
Step 5: Hydrate Before Arranging
Give your flowers at least 4 to 6 hours to hydrate in a cool, dark place before you start arranging. We know it is tempting to dive right in, but this step makes all the difference. Some flowers like roses should keep their protective wrap on during this time to help the heads stay upright as they rehydrate.
Step 6: Remove Guard Petals
Many farm-fresh flowers arrive with guard petals, the outer petals that protect the bloom during shipping. These may appear slightly discolored or bruised and that is completely normal. Gently remove them after hydration and you will find the beautiful, vibrant petals underneath just waiting to bloom.
Step 7: Find the Right Spot
Keep your flowers in a cool environment away from direct sunlight, heat vents, and ripening fruit. Ethylene gas from fruit speeds up wilting, so keep your blooms away from the fruit bowl and they will thank you for it.
Step 8: Maintain Your Blooms
Every 2 days, re-cut the stems, clean your vase, and replace with fresh water. This simple habit can add days to the life of your flowers and keep them looking their best from the first day to the last.
